Of course, with a name like Coastal Adaptive Sports, it’s safe to assume that we offer, well, adaptive sports! And that’s true - we’re proud to offer several sports programs and events to the Grand Strand area, including surfing, basketball, biking, and other sports. From the outside looking in, most people understand that what we do is a positive thing, but have you ever really thought about the benefits of adaptive sports?

There are several wonderful reasons why adaptive sports are so important for participants as well as volunteers. These include:

A Sense of Community

One of the biggest benefits of adaptive sports is that they provide a sense of community for all involved. Quite often, many of our participants don’t have friends or family members that have to face the same challenges they do on a day-to-day basis. However, when they join us for our surfing, biking, basketball, and other programs, they get to see, meet, and interact with others who happen to have disabilities engaging in fun activities they may not have thought to be possible before.

Improved Quality of Life

This point goes hand-in-hand with the one above. Unfortunately, many people who happen to have a disability may be self-conscious or are nervous about participating in social events or activities. Adaptive sports give these people a community that makes them feel welcomed, safe, and provides happiness for improved quality of life.

Accomplishment

Another great benefit our participants experience from our events and programs is a feeling of accomplishment. We can’t tell you how many times we’ve welcomed newcomers who were afraid to try surfing or biking because they weren’t sure if they’d be able to do it or not. But when they catch that first wave or finish a lap on a bike, the smile on their faces is worth a billion words.

As with anything else, there are plenty of other things that may be added to this list - but the biggest takeaway from our blog post today is that there are plenty of people who experience great benefits of adaptive sports. Whether that’s making new friends, improving their mood, reducing anxiety & depression, and much more; we can all agree on one thing - adaptive sports changes lives for the better.
