Did you know that, according to the World Bank, about 15% of the world’s population live with some form of disability? That’s around one billion people! Knowing this number certainly helps put things into perspective and makes it easy to understand the importance of sports for athletes with disabilities.

At Coastal Adaptive Sports, our goal is to provide a safe and welcoming sports community for those who happen to have a disability. In fact, we offer a variety of adaptive sports so that there’s an option for everyone! We welcome people of all ages to join us to have tons of fun while we stay active and create an awesome community of friends who feel more like family.

Check out the sports we offer:

Recreational Wheelchair Basketball

One of the sports we offer for athletes with disabilities is our recreational wheelchair basketball program. This program is offered in two different forms: competitive basketball and an option for those who want to play just for fun.

There are weekly pick-up games for those who want to play for fun. There are 8 “loaner chairs” available for anyone who wants to join us. The best part? It’s free and anyone can come play - even those who don’t have a disability. Wheelchair basketball is tons of fun and is great exercise.

Our competitive team, The Coastal Chairmen, is a division 3 wheelchair basketball team that plays as part of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. You can learn more about them in our blog post about The Coastal Chairmen.

Adaptive Cycling

If you’re nervous about riding a bike with us - don’t be! We have plenty of adaptive cycles and tons of friendly volunteers to make cycling fun and easy for you. At our cycling events, you’ll see hand-cycles, side-by-side tandem trikes, and even multi-wheeled cycles with chairs in different positions. Our adaptive cycling events are a great way to get outside and exercise while having fun with friends.

Wheel to Surf

Perhaps our most popular sport is our Wheel to Surf event. Wheel to Surf is a surf clinic for all ages. Individuals who happen to have a disability are welcome to join us on the beach for a sun day of surfing. If you’re nervous, we understand, but let us assure you that we have tons of super friendly volunteers who are always here to help you. Our events feature surfers who ride tandem, seated, prone, and standing. We welcome anyone and everyone to come out and enjoy the waves. You can even just hang out on the beach and watch if you’d like, but we always encourage everyone to give surfing a shot at least once!

Other Sports

While we may not have these other sports as often as the ones above, we welcome people to join us for the following activities:

  • Full Moon Drum Circle: On the first Saturday after each full moon, we get together at the Myrtle Beach State Part with the Myrtle Beach Drum Circle group. This is tons of fun and everyone is welcome!

  • Wheelchair Games: Once a year our group of athletes take part in the Wheelchair Games - a track and field event. This event is a qualifier for the Paralympic Games.

  • Kayaking: Every once in a while we’ll also offer adaptive Kayaking led by the Horry County Parks and Recreation team on the Waccamaw River.
